Freiberg disease 2018-02-01T05:50:09+00:00

As a form of avascular necrosis in the metatarsal bone of the foot, Freiberg disease (Freiberg infraction) mostly develops in the second metatarsal in the children. When multiple tiny fractures produce in the middle of the metatarsal where the growth plate meets, the blood flow to the end of the metatarsal impairs and bone cells (osteonecrosis) die. Young women athletes with abnormally long metatarsals are more prone to Freiberg disease.
